McCleary the Wonderkid
By: Stuart | February 22nd, 2008Following my club’s fustrating failure to make any big signings during the transfer window, I’m pleased to be able to say that we have managed to sign a young fellow who looks very promising for the future.
His name is Gareth McCleary, and he was bought for peanuts from Bromley, where he was held in high regard by the club and their fans.
Initially I didn’t get too excited about this, he was playing non-league football after all, but then he scored what was described as a ’sensational’ goal on his debut for our reserves.
Then Colin Calderwood starts singing his praises, even hinting that he might be on the bench before our game against Carlisle fell victim to the ‘big freeze’. I decided I needed to see if this boy is really worth the hype, and so went on YouTube hoping to maybe find a video of him in action.
It turns out there were quite a few, and yes, he looks rather good! Unfortunately the user seems to have removed most of them, so I’ll just leave you with this one……..

Hi, Im a crystal palace / brom supporter and have been been for oveer 10 years. I have seen many players come and go and higher so when I first saw Gareth play after finding out his age I knew this boy would not be at bromley long. Two Footed, strong and very fast with great feet and although his natural position is on the flanks on some occasions he has played a supporting role up front and has come up with a few vital goals. When I heard how much you got him for I was astonished as it was as you say ‘peanuts’ in the market today. But I’m happy he has got his shot at the league because imho he was too good to stay at conference level and I think it was just a matter of time. At his age along with the full time coaching he’ll now be getting I believe he’ll get a lot better and if NF give him time to settle and gain his confidence I believe you’ll have a very exciting player.
